TECHNOLOGY

Augmented Reality (AR)

Augmented Reality (AR) is a view of the real world with elements that are enhanced through technology to display context specific media. Think graphics, videos and audio superimposed over the real world from a smartphone or tablet.

So far, AR has mostly been utilized to tag two-dimensional images or codes to bring up video or graphical content.  We believe that these are amazing advancements into how digital technology can alter our reality but few have managed to actually augment the lives of users.

THE FIELD NOTEBOOK:
Capturing the Creative Process of Art and Science

Inspired by the field notebooks of Columbia College Chicago paleontologist Robin Whatley, Associate Professor, Science & Mathematics, the new Hokin Project exhibition explores the creative process of artists, scientists, designers, and writers through the simple media of paper, pen, and pencil. The exhibition showcases the creative landscape that notebooks, sketchbooks, and journals provide for diverse minds across disciplines to record basic observations or wrestle profound complexities.

For the first time, The Hokin Project is testing the use of augmented reality (AR) technology to further engage visitors and provide more in-depth content. Using smartphones and the free DAQRI App, visitors can link to 3-D projections, videos, and other information throughout the exhibition. This prototype experience was developed by David Christopher Krause, Lecturer, Cinema Art + Science, in collaboration with Meredith Bahuriak.
